Effect of Guava and Jamun leaf meal mixture supplementation on nutrient utilization efficiency of broiler chicks

Abstract
One hundred and twenty day old broiler chicks were used to investigate the effect of guava and jamun (50:50) leaf meal mixture (LMM) on production performance index, economic efficiency, nutrient digestibility and its utilization efficiency of broiler chicks. The birds were randomly allocated into four treatment groups with three replicates, and each replicate containing 10 broiler chicks in a completely randomized design (CRD). The LMM was supplemented @ 0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 % of diet in T1, T2, T3 and T4 groups. Feed intake, final body weight, feed conversion ratio (FCR), production and performance index and nutrient utilization efficiency were determined. Feed intake, final body weight, production performance index decreased as the level of LMM increased. Apparent digestibility (%) of dry matter, crude protein and crude fibre were significantly (P<0.05) lower, while digestibility of organic matter, ether extract and nitrogen free extract were comparatively lower in T4 than that of T1, T2 and T3. Moreover, nitrogen (N) intake and retention were significantly (P<0.05) lower and N excretion was significantly higher in T3 and T4 than that of T1 and T2. It can be concluded that LMM supplementation (2.5%) in broiler chickens improved economic efficiency without much affecting nutrient digestibility.
